She holds arrows and a palm branch to symbolize her martyrdom, and an anchor representing faith is on the right. The spelling of her name, Philomene, is the French version of Philomena. The reverse has a stem of lilies which represent purity. The body of St Philomena was found in 1802 during the course of an archaeological dig in the Catacombs of Priscilla in Rome. Her grave was covered with tiles marked with symbols indicating that it was the grave of a martyr named Philomena. It was determined that she was martyred at age 14 during the early days of the church. After her body was moved to a chapel in Mungano, Italy, many miracles were attributed to her intercession including the healing of illnesses, blindness, wounds, and the overnight cure of a severe heart ailment. She is the only person to be made a saint based solely on miraculous intercession and answer to prayers.
