Description Size: 3/4 inch Material: Sterling silver This medal shows St Agatha sitting in prison while God’s light shines upon her. She is holding the pincers that were part of her martyrdom. The etching asks in French for St Agatha to “Pray for us.” The initials on the back of the medal represent the Latin phrase “Mentem Sanctam Spontaneam Honorem Deo Et Patriae Liberationem” which means that Saint Agatha had a “holy and generous soul, gave honour to God, and accomplished the liberation of her country.” St Agatha was a beautiful, Christian girl in ancient Rome. When the emperor called for persecution of Christians, the local magistrate, Quinctianus, tried to blackmail Agatha for sex in return for his protection. When she refused his advances, he had her put in a brothel. After she refused to cooperate, she was beaten and tortured, including having her breasts removed. At the time of her death an earthquake struck leading to her patronage for protection from natural disasters.
