The legend of St Blaise claims that he was a Christian philosopher and physician who lived in Armenia around the year 350. Looking for solitude, he lived in a cave, but people frequently sought him out for healing in both their bodies and spirits. After he was appointed bishop of Sebastia, he was arrested and imprisoned for his faith. While in jail a mother brought him her son who was choking on a fish bone. St Blaise healed him instantly, leading to his patronage for throat problems. He was later tortured and beheaded for refusing to renounce his faith.
