Description This medal shows St Martin de Porres in the garden of his monastery holding a broom and crucifix in the cloister of his monastery. Originally a servant at the Holy Rosary Dominican Priory in Lima, Peru, he was promoted to almoner and then put in charge of the infirmary where he was known for his miraculous cures. He became the first black person admitted to the Dominican order in 1603 and the first black saint in the Americas. It was cast in sterling silver from an antique medal in the Rosa Mystica Collection so it shows all the beauty and history of the original piece.
