Situado na região central do Rio Grande do Sul, o município de Santa Maria apresenta uma flora rica em angiospermas nativas e naturalizadas. Mais ao norte, a vegetação sofre grande influência do bioma Mata Atlântica. Já ao sul, a leste e a oeste, observa-se maior influência do bioma Pampa. Nessa verdadeira zona de contato entre dois biomas, são encontradas cerca de 140 famílias de angiospermas. O primeiro inventário da flora de Santa Maria foi publicado nos anos de 1962 e 1965, pelo médico e professor Romeu Beltrão. Mais de cinquenta anos após a publicação da primeira Flórula, apresenta-se agora a Flora de Santa Maria revisitada. O termo “revisitada” é empregado no título pois se trata de um olhar atualizado sobre a temática, contendo fotos, chaves e comentários por espécie, e seguindo um novo sistema de classificação (APG IV). Inicialmente, é feita uma recuperação histórica da flora de Santa Maria, do herbário SMDB e de Romeu Beltrão. Em seguida, apresentam-se 27 famílias de angiospermas e um total de 393 espécies nativas e naturalizadas do município. São fornecidas breves descrições das famílias, comentários sobre as espécies e chaves para a identificação das plantas registradas para Santa Maria. Ao final do volume, o leitor encontra dezenas de fotografias coloridas das espécies citadas ao longo do texto. Esta obra contou com o entusiasmo, o conhecimento e o trabalho de estudantes, técnicos, professores e pesquisadores.
