Description This medal shows Padre Pio before he became a saint and has the simple Italian inscription “Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, Capucin” (He was a monk of the Capucin order.) He has his hand raised in blessing to show the stigmata (wounds of Christ) that he had on his hands. The reverse shows Our Lady of Czestochowa, a miraculous Polish icon of the Virgin Mary. Padre Pio was born in 1887 and named Francesco Forgione to a very poor family. In spite of many health problems, he was ordained a priest at the age of 22. One day in 1918 as he was praying before a crucifix he received the stigmata. Word of this spread and many interested people, especially WWII soldiers, flocked to see Padre Pio. He became known as a miracle worker and was reportedly able to bilocate, heal with a touch, and read the consciences of those who went to him for confession. In 1956 he founded The Home for the Relief of Suffering, a hospital that now serves 60,000 people a year. He died in 1968. This medal is made of sterling silver and will come with a matching holy card in an organza gift bag, so it is ready to give as a present to someone else or yourself. It was cast from a vintage medal in my collection so it shows all the wear of the original piece. It has been tumbled for durability and oxidized to give it an aged patina. Size: 5/8 inch Material: Sterling silver
