She took a vow of perpetual virginity, but her beauty caught the eye of Olybrius, a local Roman prefect. When she refused his offer of marriage, he cruelly persecuted her for her Christian Faith and threw her into prison. St Margaret’s most famous legend says that while in prison she encountered satan in the form of a dragon. The dragon attempted to swallow her, but the crucifix she carried irritated his throat so much that he was forced to disgorge her. Because of her safe delivery from the dragon she was made the patron saint of childbirth.
