Her image is surrounded by angel’s wings with a small heart and cross above her. St Frances Xavier Cabrini was born in Italy in 1850. She was one of 13 children and grew up on a farm. Even though ill health initially kept her from becoming a nun, she was asked to teach at a girl’s school by the local bishop. He was so impressed with her that he sent her to the United States with 6 other nuns in 1889 to work with Italian immigrants. She founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart and over the next 28 years founded 67 schools, hospitals, and orphanages to help the Italian immigrant community. She became a United States citizen in 1909, and in 1949 she became the first US citizen to become a saint. The medal was cast in sterling silver from an antique medal in the Rosa Mystica Collection so it shows all the beauty and history of the original piece.
