It’s inscribed in French, “Saint Maurice Priez Pour N. [Nous]” (St Maurice Pray For Us). St Maurice was an Egyptian officer in the Theban legion of the army of Emperor Maximian Herculius. This legion was composed entirely of Christians. In order to ensure a victory in battle, the entire army was ordered to make a sacrifice to the pagan gods. When Maurice and his legion refused to participate in the ceremony, Maximian ordered that all 6000 men should be put to death. The men were encouraged to stay true to their faith by Maurice and his other officers. Maurice and the entire legion were martyred. This medal was cast in sterling silver from an antique medal in the Rosa Mystica Collection so it shows all the beauty and history of the original piece.
