The inscription reads “St Etienne” with is the French spelling of St Stephen. The reverse shows a depiction of his death. St Stephen was the first Christian martyr. After being made a deacon of the church in Jerusalem, he began to preach the gospel to crowds in the streets, making enemies of the Jewish authorities. He was accused of blasphemy; when while speaking in his own defense, he claimed to see a vision of Jesus at the side of God . This caused an uproar, and he was dragged out of the city and stoned to death. One of the witnesses to his execution was Saul of Tarsus who watched the coats of those doing the stoning. Saul was later converted and became St Paul, one of the greatest Christian missionaries ever.
