Description Size: A little less than 3/4 inch Material: Sterling silver This beautiful medal shows St Catherine holding the sword that was used in her martyrdom in her right hand and a palm branch representing a martyr’s death in her left. Behind her you can see the spiked wheel that was also used in her martyrdom and is her symbol in art. St Catherine was a Roman convert to Christianity. She was educated in rhetoric; and at age 18, during the persecutions of emperor Maximus, offered to debate a group of pagan philosophers. As a result of her arguments, the pagan philosophers converted to Christianity and were martyred. Catherine was tortured and put into prison. The empress was intrigued by her; and when she went to visit Catherine, she was converted to Christianity and was martyred as well. Maximus ordered for Catherine to be tortured on a spiked wheel; but when she touched it, the wheel fell apart. She was then martyred by beheading.
